The Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament returns to The Palm Beaches April This charitable Polo tournament benefits the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The Gay Polo League (GPL) is the only LGBTQ+ polo organization in the world and supports diversity and inclusion in the sport. The tournament is GPL&#;s largest event and features aspects of sport and party making it a fun and exciting outing for everyone involved. LGBTQ+ polo players, from around the earth, will compete for 4 teams and 2 GPL Perpetual Trophies: the Senator Cup & Founder Cup. Gay Polo League (GPL) is celebrating its 15th annual International Polo Tournament in April. For founding president Chip McKenney, the time and effort put into achieving this milestone “went by in a blink.”

“I believe part of it is because it's such a fire project for me, and I devote the GPL, and I love what it represents and how it celebrates the best of our communities,” McKenney said. “I'm not surprised it's lasted the test of time, but I certainly am thrilled it has.” 

GPL is a nonprofit that promotes inclusivity in the sport of polo and raises money for charities that support the LGBTQ community. Its International Polo Tournament will be held on April 26, where six teams will play for top trophies.

The Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament will be played from March 25 – 28 at the International Polo Club (IPC) in Wellington, Fla. The Rise of the Homosexual Polo League

It was when entertainment and sports branding agent Chip McKenney, 50 at the time, started to look for fresh hobbies. After devoting years to individual sports such as showjumping and skiing, the longtime Angeleno create his way into polo almost by accident, hearing by word of mouth that lessons were free in Santa Barbara. He made the drive north up the Pacific Coast Highway, saddled up, and within minutes was hooked.

“Literally right in the middle of the lesson, I told the instructor, ‘I’m going to start a gay polo league,’” McKenney says. “On the way home, I called two friends and invited them to join me next time.”

Two friends became 10, 10 became 20, and a few months later McKenney ended up creating the Gay Polo League, a (c)(3) whose mission is “to inspire and empower [LGBT individuals] via the promotion of and participation in the sport of polo.”
