One of the less publicized dimensions of the post-Anita Bryant, anti-gay backlash is in the cultural sphere. Here are some developments in this arena since Dade County. Many examples show my Canadian context but are typical of general trends in the U.S. and Western Europe.
GAYS AND FILM
London: Last summer's homosexual season at the National Film Theatre, organized by Richard Dyer, almost didn't make it. The Festival of Light, the local cultural umbrella bureaucracy, tried to stop the pioneering gay series up to the last minute. Although the festival did eventually go on after many delays, the British Clip Institute, the sponsoring body, was persuaded to provide the season a subdued profile in its publicity and provided only a stark list of titles to the public, without displays or stills. The BFI also imposed a ban on "hard-core" pornography from the start.

The Power of Yes: A Wakefield Poole Remembrance
By Andrew Repasky McElhinney.
Pooles existence covers an enviable (at least in retrospect, at least to me) span of the post-WWII 20th century America. [with] one of the first positive representations of Queer life and Lgbtq+ sex in the U.S., and a talisman for the then emerging Movement movement.

Poole is peripherally involved with legendary flop mainstream musicals like Do I Hear a Waltz? Dear In late , a little over two years after the Stonewall Riots, there were no out celebrities. That changed on December 27, when a respected Broadway choreographer/director and his business manager opened a low budget 16mm movie in a rundown art house theater on 55th Street. “Boys in the Sand” was a phenomenon and utterly new—an artistically photographed, sexually explicit narrative production, set to classical music and featuring only male actors. These actors had unsimulated sex with each other on the beach, by a pool, and in a glamorous Fire Island house. It was presented and advertised as a legitimate film because it had no precedent. It wasnt like the seedy loops that ran at the 42nd Street porno houses. It was gay sex positive, showing male lover male sex and sexuality as something beautiful and to be admired. And the film made a lot of money. Variety took notice and trumpeted “Amateurs Bring in Bonanza.” Straight couples and women showed up.
