Tolkien’s Gay Landscape: Three Papers on Middle-earth’s Heterotopias

The following papers will explore Tolkien’s queer landscapes of Middle-earth: from Arda’s highest peaks and hidden underbellies, to her liminal, fae places, using the lens of Michel Foucault’s heterotopias.
Marita Arvaniti will introduce the panel and speak Tolkien’s Faerian Drama and its partnership to the much-maligned Tom Bombadil episode, focusing on the queer figure of Tom Bombadil himself and his heterotopic domain.

Plot Synopsis
Les Stroud travels to some of the most remote places on the planet to spend second with the last indigenous tribes while learning techniques, secrets and rituals rarely shown to outsiders. Stroud immerses himself in their lifestyle and culture to show how they&#;ve survived in the wild for thousands of years -- before they vanish forever. His destinations include: Sri Lanka, where he lives with the Vedda, alongside men once believed to be half-human/half-demon; Madagascar, where he learns the survival techniques of the Antanosy tribe, including spiritual practices and wild dog chasing skills; the Kalahari Desert in Namibia, where the San teach him to hunt with poison arrows and practice a famous trance dance that allows them to communicate with the spirit world; Papua New Guinea, where the Hewa people let him witness a "comoutin" ceremony -- something no outsider has seen in 40 years; Indonesia, where he endures tattooing by spike and stick with the Mantawai.
